Institute of Psychoanalysis

Bold and considerate architectural interventions within a historic building

The Institute of Psychoanalysis (IoPA) commission came via an Architecture Foundation competition for emerging architecture practices. The design is an example of how new architectural interventions within a historic building can be bold and considerate. The design focuses on recovering the spatial and material qualities of the original dairy building while creating contemporary spaces for use by the clinic, members of the institute and the public.

The first phase focused on renovating the lower ground floor of the clinic. Reorganised around a generous central hallway, enlarged consultation rooms are given deep thresholds to provide privacy. Bespoke, built in furniture incorporates sinks and concealed radiators. Vivid combinations of colour distinguishes similar spaces. A candidates’ room, seminar space, waiting room and archive were also created alongside a new accessible bathroom.

The second phase will transform the members’ spaces. The Sigmund Freud Lecture Theatre will be reconfigured as a suite of interconnected, generously proportioned public rooms accessed by a new lift and staircase. The space will be flexible, hosting lectures, workshops or events such as book launches, exhibitions or community gatherings.

Timber linings with clerestory glazing will bring in natural light and create openness while subdividing the spaces and concealing services. The remarkable existing ceiling of brick vaults and iron girders will be lined with acoustic plaster and painted to create a polychromatic composition overhead. The entrance foyer will be renovated and enlarged by adding a rear extension with the provision of a seating and display area, cloak room and new bathrooms. The renovated building will be fully accessible to all users.
